Apparel Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

What are Certainty Protective Technologies?

Caresmatic Brands’ proprietary Certainty Protective Technologies were developed for demanding clinical environments, where healthcare professionals and their uniforms are routinely exposed to unwanted bacteria and fluids.

Integrated into the fabrics and tested effective through the life of the garment, they give medical apparel added protections beyond those found in traditional scrubs and lab coats. Currently, we offer two Certainty Protective Technologies in select scrubs, lab coats, and other apparel products:

Certainty antimicrobial fabric technology

  • Inhibits the growth of bacteria which cause odor and fabric damage

  • Helps prevent lingering smells and musky odor buildup

  • Reduces bacteria-related fabric decay and discoloration so items stay fresh-looking for longer

  • Reduces the bacterial load on garments during and after laundering

Certainty fluid barrier fabric technology

  • Repels most liquids and oils, which bead up and roll off

  • Reduces the risk of liquids soaking through the fabric

  • Helps protect the garment from damage from spills and stains

  • Retains full effectiveness through 50 home launderings, following care instructions

  • Does not affect the fabric’s softness, drape, or breathability

About Certainty antimicrobial fabric technology

How does Certainty antimicrobial fabric technology work?

The technology is activated when it comes into contact with bacteria that cause odor and fabric damage. It works by interfering with the bacterial cell’s ability to replicate and remain viable, effectively stopping or greatly slowing down its growth. Because fewer bacteria are able to form or proliferate on the garment, Certainty antimicrobial fabric technology improves durability and reduces odor.

Garments smell fresher after a long shift, and they resist unpleasant odor buildup. Our antimicrobial technology also helps prevent fabric decay and discoloration, so scrubs and lab coats look and fit better for longer than those without this protection.

How quickly does it take for Certainty antimicrobial fabric technology start working?

The technology starts to work upon contact with unwanted bacteria on the fabric. It affects the ability of the cell to replicate and remain viable; so it is longer able to damage the fabric. While the bacteria cell is rendered ineffective almost immediately, apoptosis (cell death) is not instant.

How long will Certainty antimicrobial fabric technology last on the garment?

TThe technology is tested to perform for 50 home washings with appropriate care; the expected life of an average garment as determined by The Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute. Please follow care instructions provided on the label.

About Certainty fluid barrier fabric technology

How does Certainty fluid barrier fabric technology work?

Unlike some conventional fluid barrier treatments, ours is not sprayed on the surface. Certainty Fluid Barrier Technology integrates a revolutionary spill resistance into the individual fibers of the fabric, so that each works to repel liquids and oils. Most bead up and roll off the fabric, or can be removed by dabbing with a damp cloth.

Our process uses nanotechnology to permanently attach tiny molecules to fibers without clogging the fabric weave. The fluid barrier becomes part of the garment, adding protection without compromising its color, softness, drape, or breathability.

How effective is Certainty fluid barrier fabric technology at repelling liquids?

Garments treated with our fluid barrier fabric technology are tested against a variety of liquids and stain agents to ensure they meet or exceed industry standards for repelling liquids. However, garments with our fluid barrier fabric technology are not waterproof and are not personal protective equipment.

Fabric Care

What are the recommended cleaning instructions for garments with Certainty Protective Technologies?

Certainty Protective Technologies are designed to stand up to real life. Simply wash the garment as you would any other, following the care instructions provided on the label.

Garments treated with fluid barrier fabric technology require tumble-drying with heat; and steam-ironing will enhance performance. Liquid softeners and dryer sheets are not recommended for fabrics treated with fluid barrier technology. Dry-cleaning is allowed; however, the technology will perform better on garments that are machine-washed.

Safety

Can garments with Certainty fluid barrier fabric technology be used as PPE (personal protective equipment)?

No, garments with Certainty fluid barrier fabric technology are not waterproof and should not be used as personal protective equipment.

Is Certainty antimicrobial fabric technology safe for me and my family?

Yes. The antimicrobial fabric technology has been tested extensively by independent third-party experts and reviewed by the EPA. The technology becomes part of the fabric, where it activates only in the presence of unwanted bacteria on the garment. Certainty Protective Technologies won’t irritate your skin and won’t wash out or rub off, when used appropriately.

Will the antimicrobial fabric technology irritate my skin?

The issue of skin sensitivity is paramount in any change that we make to our textiles. We are very aware of this issue, and our partners have performed extensive testing not only on the underlying technology (which is all that the EPA requires), but also on the treated garments.

Do the technologies in Certainty Protective Technologies have an impact on the environment?

The technologies behind behind Certainty Protective Technologies been approved by the EPA to be safe for humans and the environment.

Is Certainty fluid barrier fabric technology PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) free?

Yes. In 2006, our fluid barrier fabric technology partner took the initiative in becoming one of the first companies to introduce a C6-based, PFOA-free repellency solution to the market. "PFOA-free" denotes that there is no detection of PFOA by the most sensitive testing equipment available.
